Channel 4 is a publicly-owned, commercially-funded public service broadcaster serving the whole of the UK. It produces internationally acclaimed, award winning programmes across its broadcast and digital platforms, commissioning UK content from the independent production sector. The 4Life project is designed to provide a "scrapbook" portal for Channel 4 customers to create their own custom view of links and related material to other Channel 4 websites, which provide media content.
In order to deliver this service, Channel 4 needed to achieve the optimal configuration of the technologies developed for the project. This was delivered by a third-party and Channel 4 needed to ensure the smooth operation of its service to the public.
Intechnica provided Channel 4 with a dedicated Performance consultant to oversee the Performance and Testing needs of the project, including performance governance spanning across Development, Testing and Operations. Intechnica's consultancy ultimately extended beyond the original remit to provide direct assistance to the Development team.
Intechnica's expertise was a major factor in identifying several Performance related issues, allowing these challenges to be overcome, which was essential in enabling Channel 4 to attain its targets in the project. These included optimising NoSQL database configuration, web server deployment and reconfiguration and identifying capacity limitations under peak load targets. Channel 4 was able to achieve its project goals as a result of the identification and resolution of these issues, and achieved 7% reduction on overall costs.
